Lester Named Sox Pitcher Of The Year
By Administrator | December 18, 2009
For the second straight year, southpaw Jon Lester has been named the Red Sox “Pitcher of the Year” by the Boston chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.
Lester went 15-8, with a 3.41 ERA, last season and struck out a career-high 225 batters (third in the American League)… but his choice could be considered a mild upset, as Josh Beckett led the team in wins (17), winning percentage (.739), complete games (4), WHIP (1.19), innings pitched (212.1) and OBA (.296).
He becomes the first Red Sox pitcher to receive the honor in consecutive seasons since righty Pedro Martinez was so honored from 1998-2000.
The BBWAA-Boston also honored Tampa Bay Rays first baseman Carlos Pena as New England Player of the Year, former PawSox manager (and new Red Sox first-base coach) Ron Johnson as Unsung Hero, and longtime Providence Journal Red Sox beat writer Steve Krasner as the Dave O’Hara Award winner.
The awards dinner is scheduled for January 14, 2010, at the Westin-Waterfront Hotel, South Boston. Tickets are $150 apiece and can be purchased by sending a check to Boston Chapter-BBWAA, P.O. Box 7346, Nashua, N.H. 03060.
