Dave Stapleton, the late-inning defensive replacement who was kept on the bench by manager John McNamara during Game 6 of the World Series (then to watch the ball roll through Bill Buckner’s legs), left the Red Sox as he signed a free agent contract with the Seattle Mariners. Stapleton, who had been the runner-up in the Rookie of the Year voting in 1980, was released at the end of Spring Training in 1987 and never played in the major leagues again.
