This Day In Red Sox History: December 26, 1919 (Bye, Bye Babe)

By Administrator | December 26, 2009

Material for This Day In Red Sox History is drawn from Bill Nowlin’s “Day by Day with the Boston Red Sox”

In a Christmas present, Red Sox owner Harry Frazee agrees to sell Babe Ruth to the NY Yankees — though the deal was not formally announced until January 3, 1920. The actual agreement was for $125,000, but a side deal included a loan of $350,000 to Frazee from the Yankees owners, who took a mortgage on Fenway Park as collateral.
