Arizona: MLB.com says Brandon Webb is resigned to the likelihood that he will be leaving the Diamondbacks when he reaches free agency. The righty was quoted as saying: “I don’t know what my future holds… I don’t want to just totally tie myself down to Arizona. It’s not that I don’t want to play here, I’ve said all along this is my first choice. I’ve really enjoyed my time here, enjoyed my teammates and I think we’ve got a great squad… It happens to people every year, they have to move on and go somewhere else.”
Atlanta: David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution writes that OF Jordan Schafer started hitting two weeks ago and that he feels no pain for the first time since he felt a pop in his wrist last April. He struggled through the pain and hit just .204, with 2 HR and 8 RBI (and 63 K) in 167 at-bats after the injury. He was demoted by the end of May and had surgery in September.
Chicago Cubs: The Cubs signed OF Xavier Nady to a one-year, $3.3 million contract that contains incentives which could add another $2 million in performance-based pay. He is expected to serve as the club’s fourth outfielder.
Cincinnati: The Reds and SS Orlando Cabrera agreed to a one-year, $3 million contract… the deal reportedly includes a $3 million option for 2011, with a $1 million buyout.
Colorado: FOXSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Rockies have signed former Orioles 3B Melvin Mora to a one-year, $1.3 million contract. He’ll serve as the Rockies primary utilityman after hitting just .260/.321/.358 last season.
Florida: The Marlins have signed former Brewers closer Derrick Turnbow to a minor league deal. He suffered a shoulder injury and hasn’t pitched in the big leagues since 2008.
Houston: RHP Doug Brocail has decided to retire: “I am retiring because it’s harder to get my arm in shape and the talent just isn’t there anymore. There’s no use in just hanging on.” The 42-year-old right-hander retires with a 4.00 ERA in 15 major league seasons.
Los Angeles Dodgers: The Dodgers and C Brad Ausmus have finalized a one-year, $1 million deal that will bring him back to the Dodgers for the 2010 season. He hit .295 in just 95 at-bats last year.
Milwaukee: The Brewers have signed OF Jim Edmonds to a minor league contract. The one-time defensive standout must be added to the major league roster by March 25th or he will be granted his release. He’ll make $850,000 if he makes the roster, with a chance to make another $2.0-2.5 million in performance incentives.
NY Mets: The Mets signed IF-OF Fernando Tatis to a one-year contract… while the details of the contract were not disclosed, it is expected he will something similar to the $1.5 million he made last season.
Philadelphia: The Phillies will be in Phoenix, Arizona on Tuesday to watch free agent lefty Noah Lowry throw. The southpaw hasn’t pitched in a major league game since 2007 due to his battle with thoracic outlet syndrome. He had a 4.03 ERA from 2003-2007 with the SF Giants.
Pittsburgh: The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is reporting that NHL star Mario Lemieux and Pittsburgh Penguins co-owner Ron Burkle recently made an unsolicited offer to buy the Pirates from owner Bob Nutting, who did not respond to the overture but declares the team is not available.
St. Louis: The Cards are rumored to be one of the teams who could possibly sign free agent RHP Chien-Ming Wang to a contract within the next week.
San Diego: INF Mark Loretta has retired in order to accept a front office job with the Padres. He will take over as a special assistant to the Padres’ baseball operations staff.
San Francisco: ESPN’s Buster Olney writes that the Giants and closer Brian Wilson have agreed on a one-year deal that will keep the parties out of the arbitration room. The deal is for one year and $4.437 (the midpoint between the $4 million and $4.875 million figures submitted earlier this month).
Washington: The Nats and free agent 2B Orlando Hudson are far apart on a potential contract… the team has offered $3 million while the player and his agent are asking for $9 million.
