This Day In Red Sox History: March 1, 1954
By Administrator | March 1, 2010
Material for This Day In Red Sox History is drawn from Bill Nowlin’s “Day by Day with the Boston Red Sox”
Within an hour of suiting up for spring training, Ted Williams injured his shoulder when diving for a ball in the outfield. He did not return to action until May 15th.
Teddy Ballgame hit .345 for the season, but did not win the batting title (Bobby Avila, .341) due to the fact he had only 386 at-bats — 14 ABs shy of the required 400 ABs. But he did walk a league-leading 136 times.
Later the league changed the basis for designating awards to plate appearances instead of at-bats.
