This Day In Baseball History: March 18th

By Administrator | March 18, 2010

In 1942, White Sox manager Jimmy Dykes allowed two blacks, Jackie Robinson and Nate Moreland, to work out in the team’s Pasadena, CA training camp, but later dismissed both players.

In 1943, due to wartime travel restrictions, spring training camps opened in northern locations… some of the locales included Bear Mountain, NY (Dodgers); French Lick Springs, IN (Cubs and White Sox); Ashbury Park, NJ (Yankees); Medford, MA (Red Sox) and Wallingford, CT (Braves).

In 1953, the Braves moved to Milwaukee, ending their 77-year old association with Boston… they became the first major league club to move since 1903 when Baltimore moved to New York.

In 1957, Indians general manager Hank Greenberg turned down the Red Sox million-dollar offer for pitcher Herb Score… the former slugger said the Tribe is building for the future and would not sell its premier players.

In 1985, Commissioner Peter Ueberroth reinstated Hall of Famers Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays, who had been banned from associating with major league baseball due to their employment with Atlantic City casinos.

In 1990, after a 32-day lockout, the players and owners reached agreement on a four-year contract… the season started a week behind schedule, but the 78 games canceled by the work stoppage were rescheduled.

In 2008, the MLBPA announced it would be looking intgo the possibility of collusion by major league owners against Barry Bonds, who hit .276 with 28 HR in 2007. Teams were understandably wary of signing Bonds, who had pleaded innocent to four counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice… but the players union saw it as something more nefarious.

In 2009, the Chicago Cubs announced it would retired the fifth number in franchise history - the #31 would be set aside in honor of both RHP Ferguson Jenkins (1966-73, 1982-83) and LHP Greg Maddux (1986-92, 2004-06). They had also retired numbers in honor of 3B Ron Santo (#10), SS Ernie Banks (#14), 2B Ryne Sandberg (#23), and OF Billy Williams (#26).
