The Red Sox reportedly offered the Cleveland Indians one million dollars to purchase the contract of pitcher Herb Score from the Cleveland Indians. The fireballer had become the apple of the Red Sox eye after winning 16 and 20 games in each of his first two years in pro baseball.

Cleveland GM Hank Greenberg declined the offer, saying he saw Score as a franchise player.

Score’s career was altered forever just 50 days later when he was drilled by a line drive that dropped him on the mound.

Score won a grand total of only 19 games throughout the remainder of his career after the beaning.
