This Day In Baseball History: March 19th

By Administrator | March 19, 2010

In 1941, recently released from the Cardinals, Paul Dean signed with the Giants… although he went 4-for-4, New York also released Dizzy’s brother.

In 1951, Tigers player representative Fred Hutchinson asked that the players have input in the selection of a new commissioner.

In 1957, in what is believed to be the largest offer for a player to date, the Indians rejected the Red Sox offer of $1 million for Herb Score. Cleveland GM Hank Greenberg said the team was interested in building for the future, not in selling its best ballplayers… six weeks later, Score was struck in the eye by a Gil McDougald liner.

In 1960, Red Sox catcher Sammy White announced he would retire rather than report to Cleveland, where he had been traded.

In 1970, Indians OF Ken Harrelson fractured his leg and would subsequently miss most of the season.

In 1977, the A’s sold pitcher Paul Lindblad to the Rangers for $400,000… Commissioner Bowie Kuhn, unlike his previous Oakland A’s decision, did not void the deal as not being in the best interest of baseball.

In 1984, Denny McLain, the last major league pitcher to win thirty games in one season, was indicted on various charges of racketeering, loan-sharking, extortion, and cocaine possession.

In 1989, in the hopes of replacing an injured Dave Winfield, the Yankees traded catcher Joel Skinner and a minor leaguer to the Indians for outfielder Mel Hall… Winfield would miss the entire season due to back surgery.

In 2002, the Yankees Entertainment and Sports Network (YES) made its debut as regional cable TV channel… the team-owned network, similar to NESN of the Red Sox, would carry Yankees games, as well as covering New Jersey Nets NBA contests.

In 2008, Red Sox players voted to boycott an exhibition game scheduled to be televised nationally and the next day’s flight to Japan for the season-opening series against the Oakland A’s in a dispute over coaches not receiving the same $40,000 stipend negotiated by the players union… the issue was resolved within a few hours.
