Around Baseball: Texas Skipper Admits To Cocaine Usage

“Umm, Ron… errrr, Ron… you might wanna wipe your nose.”

The Texas Rangers have confirmed that manager Ron Washington tested positive for using cocaine in a drug test administered during the 2009 season.

Washington admitted the cocaine use and offered to resign as soon as he was randomly selected for testing by Major League Baseball. Club president Nolan Ryan said he and general manager Jon Daniels (among others) decided not to accept the offer after they were convinced Washington had used the illegal substance just once.

Hey, Nolan, wanna buy some land in Florida? It’s really nice!

He immediately entered MLB’s drug program, which included testing three times a week. He completed the program a few weeks ago, but will ask the league to continue testing him in the future.

In a press conference held earlier today, Washington read an apology from a prepared statement: “I apologize for a huge mistake I made. I’m not here to make excuses. I’m not here for sympathy. That would be asking too much. I’m truly sorry for my careless, dangerous and, frankly, stupid behavior last year.”

Ryan said: “I was in total shock. Then I was mad. Then I was very disappointed. I went through an array of emotions.” He said the club discussed accepting Washington’s resignation but after “a lot of soul-searching” decided to allow him to remain manager: “We think of him as part of our family. Just because somebody in your family makes a mistake doesn’t mean you quit loving them. We’ll move forward.”

    Hey Sox1Fan!

First it was cocaine, now it is pot and amphetamines. But Nolan Ryan is standing by his man…maybe he was next “in line”…

    Please pass the joint!
