Around Baseball: Mariners’ Southpaw Cliff Lee Suspended Five Games
By Administrator | March 17, 2010
Seattle Mariners LHP Cliff Lee has been suspended for the first five games of the regular season for throwing over the head of Arizona batter Chris Snyder in an exhibition game on Monday. He was also fined.
The discipline was imposed by Major League Baseball’s vice-president of discipline, Bob Watson.
Lee declined to comment on the issue, by GM Jack Zduriencik said: “I’m sure Cliff’s going to appeal it, so we’ll see where it takes us.” It will be up to the players union to appeal on his behalf… assuming it does so, the penalty would be delayed until after a hearing and a decision.
Zduriencik added: “We’d like to get a definitive answer on this sooner than later so that we can get (our rotation) set. it’s certainly in everyone’s best interest - the ballclub, the other pitchers and Cliff, for that matter - that we do so.”
But otherwise, the GM had little to say: “In the end I don’t think we will have a whole lot of comment about it. … There is an appeal process and an opportunity for Cliff to state his case. He will do that and we’ll see what happens.”

Hey Sox1Fan!
Can you imagine… a major league pitcher throwing at a batter? Astonishing!! I would like to believe that Lee, or any other MLB pitcher, if he really wanted to hit a batter, could pick his spot on the batter and hit it virtually every time. These pitchers make a living at controlling where the pitch goes. Pitchers should not be punished for brushing back a batter or even hitting them away from the head. An actual headshot is a different matter. And Lee missed! Where is Roger Clemons when you need an inside pitch?
