Manager Terry Francona announced the Red Sox 25-man roster for the first round of the playoffs, and it contained a BIG surprise… a day after the manager said Tim Wakefield would be coming out of the bullpen during round one, today he announced the knuckleballer has been left OFF the roster.
Anyone who reads this site knows I have been saying Wake should have been left off the roster for more than a week—in favor of Clay Buchholz—but after yesterday’s announcement it appeared a foregone conclusion that he had made it. Not so fast!
Wakefield received a cortisone shot in his back after his last start, and the team decided today that it would be better to let him rest during the five-game, first round series. The tam is hoping his back improves enough so he can be of help in a later series.
The team is goingwith only ten pitchers so that they can have extra flexibility in the lineup against an Angels club that can do a lot of things… the team will carry three catchers, with Kevin Cash joining the roster.
