Boston Trade Market: Dye To Red Sox?

A rumored three-team deal that would have brought RF Jermaine Dye to Boston fell apart yesterday morning when the Red Sox refused to part with all-star reliever and fan favorite Hideki Okajima—the price that Chicago sought to exact from the Red Sox in return for the soon-to-be free agent.

With free agency only a couple months away and J D Drew under contract for an additional four years (and doesn’t THAT signing look worse every day?), the Red Sox are looking at Dye as a two month rental. His value is more as an insurance policy against David Ortiz’ injured knee or Drew’s continued struggles. Thus, Dye’s value from the Red Sox perspective is somewhat limited—certainly not worth surrendering an invaluable commodity like the southpaw from Japan.
Jermaine Dye has hit more HR since the All-Star break than J D Drew has hit ALL season.

Pundits expect that the Sox and the Sox will re-visit the deal over the next twenty-eight hours… likely as a two-team deal. The ChiSox want to get SOMETHING for Dye and the BoSox could use his bat on the bench. With Dye’s value limited due to his impending free agency, there is not an abundant trade market for him (although the LA Angels are interested)… so it appears the teams simply need to come to an agreement on his value.

Since the All-Star break, Dye is hitting .318 with 7 HR and 13 RBIs.

Would that be enough to convince the Red Sox to part with Wily Mo Pena and a pitching prospect? Probably… depending on the prospect.

The Boston Globe has reported that the teams have narrowed the options to Double-A hurler Justin Masterson or Sox reliever Manny Delcarmen. I dont think I would part with Masterson in the deal, but I think the Sox might be convinced to send Delcarmen westward… especially since they are moving towards acquiring Eric Gagne from the Texas Rangers. The Sox just seem to lack confidence in Delcarmen—and my guess is that the last two weeks have been an audition for acquiring teams, not a promise of future successes in Boston.

Prediction: Pena and Delcarmen for Dye… we’ll know tomorrow by 4:00PM.
